Description
A whimsical sculpture of a giant's face and hand emerges from the ground amidst lush greenery in a forested area. Sunlight filters through the surrounding trees, highlighting parts of the sculpture and the vibrant plant life.
The giant, sleeping Moss Lady sculpture is 36 feet long, and rests in Beacon Hill Park, in Victoria, B.C., Canada. The sculpture was constructed with cement, boulders, metal pipe, vinyl-coated chicken wire and a clay-based soil. Her head is six feet long, and her flowing hair is actually flowering crocosmia plants. The structure is misted 3 times a day by an irrigation system. Conceived and created by Victoria gardener Dale Doebert with help from other city employees, the artwork was directly inspired by photographs of the Mud Maid earth-sculpture found in the Lost Gardens of Heligan, in Cornwall, England.
