Description
The stark, haunting beauty of this staircase caught my eye and my imagination.
This is part of the underground portion of Fort Rodd Hill, a national historic site of Canada, which was built in the late 1890s to defend Victoria and the Esquimalt Naval Base. This coast artillery fort contains gun batteries, underground magazines, command posts, guardhouses, barracks and searchlight emplacements. The site is well represented with interpretive signs and audio-visual stations, as well as period furnished rooms. Here visitors can wander through gun batteries and underground magazines built a century ago.
