Description
Victoria, B.C.'s Ogden Point Breakwater was constructed from 1914-1917 as a major port facility on the Pacific Coast to protect Canada's trade routes. The project used over 1 million tons of rock, 10,000 granite blocks, 53 concrete caissons and over 1 million cubic yards of dredged fill.
The breakwater closed in early February of 2013 for the installation of railings after the Greater Victoria Harbour Authority decided the protective railings were needed because of liability issues. The decision caused much public discussion with some arguing that the railings were not needed or too expensive while others supported the increased safety offered.
